Firebaugh High School Thespians Take Center Stage With ‘Mean Girls Jr.’ Performance

Firebaugh High School thespians recently brought a cult classic to life with a student-led production of “Mean Girls Jr.,” presented by the Young Actors Guild (YAG) and Behind the Scenes (BTS) and performed in front of students from Abbott and Will Rogers elementary schools and the broader Lynwood community.

The story, performed by the acting club from April 1-4, follows Cady Heron, a teen navigating the challenges of high school after years of homeschooling. As she’s drawn into a world of popularity and cliques, Cady learns the importance of self-worth, authentic friendship and staying true to herself.

Students at Firebaugh High celebrated the production with a “Mean Girls”-themed spirit week. Activities led by YAG, BTS and Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports (PBIS) highlighted themes from the play, including body positivity and meaningful relationships.

“Our students did an amazing job bringing their ideas to life,” said Kate Thomas Butiu, theater advisor at Firebaugh High. “Their creativity, teamwork and passion shine through in every detail of this production.”

Many of this year’s performers were once audience members themselves, having watched past Firebaugh musicals like “The Little Mermaid” when they were in elementary school, sparking their passion for the performing arts. YAG empowers scholars to explore acting, music and dance. They bring full productions to life in collaboration with BTS, which manages all backstage elements, including stage direction, lighting, costumes, hospitality and advertising.

Lynwood Unified is proud to offer students supportive and inclusive spaces to discover their passions through meaningful experiences in the visual and performing arts. Whether performing onstage or working behind the scenes, students build creativity, confidence and real-world skills. Productions like “Mean Girls Jr.” create lifelong memories, strengthen community connections and shine a spotlight on the remarkable talents of Lynwood’s youth.
