Lynwood Unified recently celebrated the achievements of Firebaugh and Lynwood High School students participating in dual enrollment college courses through the prestigious National Education Equity Lab, a nonprofit designed to bridge the gap between high school and college for students from historically underserved communities.
During the October 10 board meeting, the District recognized students who completed online college courses during the 2023-24 school year and 40 scholars who are on their way to earning free college credits from top colleges and universities such as Cornell, Columbia, Howard, the University of Pennsylvania, Morehouse College and more.
The partnership with the Equity Lab has supported more than 130 Lynwood and Firebaugh high school students since it launched in the 2021-22 school year, providing comprehensive resources and support from top professors and guidance from Lynwood Unified educators who support the scholars during an elective period.
Students access college-level content online in subjects like postmodern history, economics, environmental studies, business management and psychology, with transcripts provided upon completion from the offering institution.
"Lynwood Unified is dedicated to ensuring every student graduates from our District having taken at least one college course, and for our students aren’t able to participate in our long-term AB288 dual enrollment program, this partnership is a fantastic alternative," Deputy Superintendent of Educational Services Shawna Dinkins, Ed.D., said. "We are proud to close the opportunity gap and unlock the full potential of every student who walks through our doors."
