Lynwood and Firebaugh high school students showcased remarkable skill and expertise acquired through Lynwood Unified’s Biomedical Sciences, Engineering and Culinary Arts programs during the SkillsUSA State Leadership & Skills Conference in April, earning them the opportunity to represent the District at the national conference this summer.
Lynwood High School seniors Juan Carlos Cuando, Jordi Daniel Camarillo, Daena Sherline Murillo and Jaret Reyes took home the gold in their respective categories in the biomedical sciences during the conference, which took place April 24-27.
Cuando won gold in the Health Occupations Professional Portfolio category with an outstanding presentation to judges that demonstrated his comprehensive understanding of healthcare knowledge and skills. Camarillo, Murillo and Reyes excelled in the Occupational Health and Safety category by assembling a detailed scrapbook highlighting their school’s Biomedical Sciences program. Their work was evaluated on planning, organization and the outcome of four health and safety projects, alongside their presentation skills.
Firebaugh High seniors Brigitte Lopez and Lucia Miguel Vargas secured their second consecutive gold medal win in the Humanoid Robotics category. Their innovative computer-programmed robot project demonstrated their advanced skills and distinct passion for science, technology, engineering and math.
Lynwood High School senior and culinary arts student Dayquian Baker demonstrated exceptional skill and presentation during the Restaurant Service category of the competition. He was challenged to showcase his front-of-house abilities such as customer service, menu presentation and order-taking at a fine dining restaurant. Baker is an active participant in the school’s culinary arts program, offered through the California Advancing Pathways for Students (CalAPS) program. CalAPS offers various career technical education pathways to students in Lynwood, Bellflower and Paramount unified school districts.
All state champions will advance to compete in the SkillsUSA National Leadership & Skills Competition from June 24-28 in Atlanta, Georgia, where more than 6,000 champions will represent their states and compete for the national gold medal.
